Andy’s Incredible Bronze Age Discovery with the Minelab MANTICORE
Few detectorists capture the spirit of discovery quite like Andy, the creator behind the popular YouTube channel UKHistoryFound. His passion for metal detecting and storytelling has inspired thousands to see the ground beneath their feet not just as soil, but as a gateway to history.
A Passion Ignited
Although Andy had owned a detector for years, it wasn’t until March 2020, during lockdown, that his true fascination with the hobby began. One evening, while out walking, he looked across a field and realised for the first time that what lay beneath the surface could hold stories stretching back thousands of years. That single thought sparked a journey that would soon change his life.
As his curiosity grew, Andy began exploring with different equipment, learning the nuances of detecting and how each signal could lead to something remarkable. Over time, his dedication led him to a detector that truly transformed his experience: the Minelab MANTICORE.
Power, Precision, and Possibility
For Andy, the MANTICORE became a game changer. Known for its power and accuracy, the machine gave him the ability to read the ground like never before. Once he learned to interpret its signals, it became an extension of his senses, guiding him to even the smallest, most elusive targets. He often describes it as a detector that “whispers secrets from the soil”, revealing finds that others might easily overlook.

A Discovery for the Ages
That mastery led to a moment that every detectorist dreams of, a once-in-a-lifetime find. While detecting with his friend Mike, Andy braved what began as a calm day and quickly turned into a storm of biblical proportions. Torrential rain, thunder, and lightning battered the field, and the pair were about to call it quits when Andy’s MANTICORE emitted a crisp, low tone, showing a solid 37 on the VDI.
Expecting another button or bit of lead, he dug down six to eight inches and spotted a sliver of metal in the sidewall. What he pulled from the earth left him speechless, a beautifully twisted Bronze Age Torc, over 3,000 years old. In disbelief, Andy called out to Mike. The two stood in the pouring rain, shouting with excitement, realising they had uncovered something extraordinary.
Bringing the Past Back to Light
The discovery was quickly reported and verified through proper channels. With guidance from James Roberts of “Ministry of Detect” and Finds Liaison Officer Heather, the Torc was officially recorded and later transferred to the British Museum for further study and valuation. For now, it rests in the hands of experts, but soon, it will be displayed behind glass for the public to admire.
The Journey Continues
Andy’s find serves as a reminder that history often lies just inches beneath our feet, waiting to be rediscovered. Yet for him, the thrill of the hunt isn’t over, he continues to explore with his Minelab MANTICORE, searching for the next incredible story buried in the earth.
