MEET MIKKEL WARMING – UNCOVERING DENMARK'S PAST, ONE SIGNAL AT A TIME
Denmark’s fields are rich with history, and for Mikkel, they’ve been the focus of nearly two decades of detecting. Based in Denmark, he spends his time exploring Bronze Age, Iron Age, Viking Age, and medieval sites — places where traces of past civilisations still lie just beneath the surface.
What started as a passion for history and discovery has gradually become a way of life. His approach combines time in the field with research and documentation, using each find to better understand the people and stories behind it.
There’s also a quieter side to detecting that keeps him grounded. Walking the land and listening closely to signals, he often loses track of time. It creates a unique sense of focus and calm. It’s this balance between exploration and stillness that continues to draw him back.
Working on historically rich farmland also brings a sense of urgency. Many artefacts are at risk from modern agriculture, and recovering them in time is just as important as finding them.
That importance is reflected in one of his most exceptional discoveries—a gold wolf-head pendant dating to around 600 AD. Believed to carry strong mythological symbolism, possibly linked to Fenrir and the Midgard Serpent, it offers a rare glimpse into the beliefs and craftsmanship of the Germanic Iron Age. Finds like this are incredibly uncommon, and being declared Danefæ highlights both its cultural significance and the responsibility that comes with recovering it.
